Care homes warned of rise in Covid-19 infections

Care home bosses in England have been urged to take “necessary action” after an increase in new coronavirus infections within the sector.

A letter from the Department of Health to care home providers said the rise in Covid-19 cases is currently among staff, but there is a risk the virus will spread to care home residents.

Meanwhile, leading charities, including Dementia UK and the Alzheimer’s Society, have said relatives should have the same access to care homes and coronavirus testing as staff, so visits can resume safely.

In a letter to the Health Secretary, the charities warned that the lack of family visits has damaged residents’ mental and physical health – particularly in dementia patients.
