Greater Manchester has joined Sheffield in halting rapid tests for care home visitors over concerns that infections are missed. 

The lateral flow tests were made available to care homes in December to reunite residents with their loved ones.

But data has shown the rapid kits miss about a third of cases detected by conventional lab tests. A trial in Liverpool found that in people with higher viral loads, rapid tests pick up only seven infections for ever 10 picked up by PCR tests.

A PCR tests misses less than 5% of infections.
